1965 dual exhaust type - rear frame rails & hangers
« on: September 06, 2013, 05:42:55 PM »
So I'm looking to determine which type of dual exhaust my SJ K Fastback came with.  It was built 10/9/64, but has an engine assembly date of 10/15/64, which from what I understand is right on the line for the cutover from the transverse dual exhaust to the Arvinode system.  I measured the rear frame rails and it's 11" from the rear shackle to the exhaust hanger on the drivers side.  12" for the same on the passenger side.  Both measured center-to-center.  Pics of the rails and hangers attached, although they are covered in thick undercoating!

Can anyone tell from this which exhaust it would have had?

Thanks,
Rich

What are the style of hangers attached to the rear floor?  That will most likely tell you which system it had.  The transverse and Arvinode most likely shared the same rear frame rail hangers.

Only one piece left on the passenger side, and looks like a Transverse type hanger to me.

Yes, agree, that looks the transverse type.  Arvinode were triangular.

Thanks all for the great information.  So next question, anyone have opinions on whether a Concourse judge would take off if I had an Arvinode system?   ??? My car is right on the line.

I don't think any judge could refute it since the scheduled build date could be off by a few weeks in either direction.

The first picture is a shot of the right frame rail showing 2 internally threaded holes. The rear Arvinode resonator hanger bolts to these holes. As you can see the hanger position is much more farther forward than the transverse muffler cars rear tailpipe hanger. These are pics a couple of months back installing the Arvinode system on my 65 K. My build dates were within the time frame and the car had those 2 mounting holes.

Shouldn't this say the later straight through dual hanger, not the transverse hanger?  From what I understood the Transverse and Arvinode systems both shared the same rear frame rail mount points - holes with a threaded plate behind them - 11" and 12" from the rear shackle.  The later straight through duals from approximately 3/22/65 changed to a hanger location just a couple inches from the rear shackle.

Thanks.  I just got this stuff straight and thought I was having a senior moment!

No doubt!  I was lucky enough to ride in (and drive) "The Arvinode Car" for 1500 miles on it's journey to a new home a couple months ago.  The sound was incredible, and it stayed in my ears for 3 days.  It took the doctors a week to remove the smile from my face.
