Fuel tank wire 12/29/67 San Jose
« on: June 25, 2021, 12:56:40 PM »
My 12/29/67 San Jose 68 has a Convenience Group fuel sender and harness running up the right side to under the dash (gauge works fine).  The car doesn't have the Convenience Group option.  It always gets noticed and I want to replace it with with a correct sender and harness.  My question is does the non-convenience group harness run the same path to the dash and with the same clips?

my observation - same path, same clips.  Your sending unit and harness are worth quite a bit of money, don't give them away.

Thanks for the reply.

Now I'm trying to figure out how far this Convenience Group harness goes.  Can you tell by this picture (behind the glove box) if the Convenience Group harness ends at these connections or is that next harness wrong too?

The replacement harnesses I'm finding just have two wires and the one two prong plug.
I also have both consoles so maybe this feeds them too.

Edit add:
The two prong plug receives the fuel sender and powers the right rear courtesy light.
The Red pronged wire feeds the upper console Map Lights.
I'm still trying to figure out what the yellow pronged wire does.

If the dash harness still exist you'll have a white connector that looks similar to the white tube style single fuse housing. The taillight wiring harness is reproduced that runs from the trunk to the A pillar. The sending units are now reproduced as well that actually work. The under-dash loom if yours is still intact is not reproduced. That would have some value. Likely the thermistor is no longer functioning. The senders are 200.00 to have restored.
I think I suggested you order a Marti report for your car. If your car came with the package it's very rare. About 2200 cars were produced for 1967 with the package. I don't think the 68 figures were much more. It would be worth seeking out the balances of the parts to have a functional convenience group.
I think I offered to purchase your sender if you elected to remove the other components.

+2 on using the same route.

With what you have posted it appears that someone may have tried to add the option but didn't get all the pieces off of the donor car. Pieces can be removed and will be worth something (I have no idea how much) to someone else looking to build a complete system. This from Kevin Marti's book

BY the wat for others its appears that 3,138 (all body type) Mustangs were ordered with option in 1967 and for 1968 the number decreases by approx 25% for a total of 4,888 for all body types. Only about 1200 in fastbacks

I have different figures in my 67 book. Likely information has changed in the last 15 years since that book was printed. I have only seen a couple cars with the system over the years.  The most common non-functioning part of the option is the low fuel warning.

Thanks for chiming in Jeff.  It looks like I have the wrong sending unit and harnesses to the dash.  What has me stumped right now is that yellow pronged wire that goes to the loom behind the glove box it seems to be a ground from the dash harness that feeds to an  open/unused female plug that terminates by the right trunk hinge.  given that the mate is on the under dash I'm think it should be hooked to something.  any ideas

Is it a bullet connector or a white plastic connector?

I have a near complete 68 set stored away that I pulled out of a junkyard car in the mid-80s.  I'll pull it out and get pictures over the weekend.  In the meanwhile take a look at the schematic in the shop manual.  The 67 version (quite different wiring design) is accurate and easy to interpret - hopefully 68 is also.

I can't tell what the wire colors are from your picture.

In any case, maybe this will help.

Thanks all for the help. I really just needed to confirm that fuel level wiring goes up the right side for both low fuel sensor and non.
