Small Block 68 Power Steering Return Hose Replacement
« on: July 06, 2022, 06:56:24 PM »
I clearly have a replacement power steering return hose. I have ordered the Scott Drake one from CJPony Parts that appears to be the correct one for my 68 Sprint B with V8 and AT. Question involves the replacement of the hose and routing of the hose after I have installed the new one.

When I remove the current one, will all of the steering fluid drain from the power steering pump?

How should I route the new hose? Does it go over or under the control valve?

Should there be installed a clamp around the pressure and return hoses keeping them snug to the control valve?

And do I need to do anything special to bleed the steering after I put in more fluid? I am assuming that I should use ATF Type F transmission fluid to replace any fluid lost during the replacement.

Yes the hose that attaches to at least the bottom of the pump will drain due to gravity if disconnected at the valve.

As far as routing I'll post a couple of pictures of some originals and see if that will help

Yes there would have been a clamp around the steel part of the line to keep them tight against the control arm and valve assembly

Just move the steering wheel from lock to lock (all the way left then right and back again) should move all the air out of the system. If you hook up the hoses backwards out. So keep you thumbs out of the inside (inside the outer rim) since the wheel will take off violently towards one of the stops.

Going to move this over to the 68 section and adjust the title a little

There are good drawings and information in the 68 chassis assembly manual.

Marty you must be looking at a different assembly manual because this is the best page on the one I have showing the steering and it isn't tall helpful for me.

As promised

From a 68 San Jose C code. One that is in the Unrestored Picture section of the site. Will be adding this collection to that thread also.

There are six pages of drawings for the installation of power steering in the "68 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual" (AM0025, pages 67 thru 72). Unfortunately, they did not reproduce very well. I used the 67 Chassis Manual as well as Ford Car Parts (the infamous MPC) to fill in missing or blurred part numbers (I have ways of deciphering missing or blurred part numbers).

It takes a bit of study but the answers are there. On that page it shows the clamp and line position you asked about.
