Question about pin striping on the doors
« on: April 14, 2021, 12:56:25 AM »
Hello all,

Can someone please educate me and tell me which year/models had the pin stripe on the sides of the car and which ones had the scallops on the quarters?  I've seen some with both.  My car has only the pin stripes.

Was this an option or was it standard?  I looked closely and it looks like it's paint and not a decal.  Did Dearborn have pin strippers?  Or maybe the decal is just all dried up.  I'm asking because the passenger door needs a bit of work.

Thank you all for your expertise

Guessing your asking about your '66?

If so, in 65-66, there was an 'Accent Group' option, which deleted the quarter ornaments and included the painted pin stripe.

In '65, it also included rocker panel moldings as they were not standard until '66.

Yes, I'm sorry.  My '66.

What other stuff came with the 'Accent Group' option in 1966?  Just the stripes?

Painted pin stripe.  Pretty cool.  Was that done by hand from the factory?

I don't know how you have all this knowledge, but I am sure glad you do!

For '66, it was just deletion of the quarter ornament and the pin stripe, about a $13 option.  Yes, the stripe was painted on.  Ford probably had a fixture to make it quick/consistent.  The last time I had this done on a restored car, the guy had magnet guides that were placed on the car and then the paint applicator fit into grooves in the guide to keep a straight line.  I'm sure there are skilled pin-stripers that can do it by hand without a guide.

As Charles mentioned, the Painted Accent Stripes were  a "Stand Alone" Option on 1966 Mustangs. This similar Option was also available on 1967 and 1968 Mustangs, at the same $13.90 price tag.

I believe that in the "scallops" you mentioned, you are referring to what was the "Standard" GT Stripe for 1968 (see picture attached). Unlike the painted Accent Stripe, this "C Stripe", as it is known by, was an adhesive transfer stripe. It was available in several colors ; Black, Blue, Red, White and Gold.

Interestingly, if you didn't like the new "C Stripe", you could order, at no additional cost, a tri-bar GT Stripe similar to those used on 1965-67 GT's.

Hope this helps clarify things for you.

Bob, do you know if the rocker stripe instead of the C stripe was available at all plants and through out 68 production ?

While 1968's are not my specialty, I can say that, based on information (a copy of which is attached) previously provided by ruppstang, the rocker (tri-bar) stripe Option was discontinued beginning 12/12/1967. Prior to that, it appears that it was an option at all plants. Of course before and after 12/12/1967, the tri-bar rocker stripes were available as a Dealer Accessory. I'm sure that Marty could provide more information if needed.

Hope this helps.
