64.5 specific starter solenoids?
« on: March 07, 2021, 09:09:54 PM »
On another forum, a member asked about 64.5 starter solenoids specifically for generator cars.  He was unable to find anything out in the various catalogs.  I relayed that there was some discussion about brown vs. other color starter solenoids, but that later solenoids should be compatible with the 64.5 generator.  I can think of no reason why it shouldn't, as the charging system is distinct from the starting system.  This was not for a concours-level car.  However, he did raise an interesting question:
Is the 64.5 starter solenoid unique for its application in generators?

I can't think of any reason way it would need to be different .

No many non Mustang generator cars with generators have been found with black solenoids during 64
calendar year of production. Starting and charging systems are not related in any application I can recall

By at least mid/late June 64 (Dearborn) had gone to the black solenoid on some, if not all, Mustangs. This same solenoid continued through the August changeover to alternators. There is also nothing in the period  Ford car parts, cross reference, or OSI manuals to suggest that the brown and black are functionally different.

Have you ever seen a confirmed original 64.5 with a brown solenoid?  Even 5F08F100001 has a black one.
