68 390 radiator and shroud
« on: February 14, 2021, 02:34:36 PM »
PO wire tied the shroud to radiator. Shroud is larger than radiator.
Shroud is marked FOMOCO and top.
No overheating issues on the 390.  Just want to do it right.
What is the best course of action?

Any markings on the radiator and/or shroud? You may have the wrong size radiator and correct shroud.

You have a narrower 1967 390 radiator and a wider 1968 fan shroud.

Bob,
Thank you so very much. That is an awesome answer and provides clarity. Its a early 68 (12/67).
I guess I will be selling the 68 shroud and try to find a 67.

I appreciate your time and expertise in answering.

Chris, you have a Ford replacement fan shroud which is a good part you should be looking for a matching 68 radiator to go with your 68 car to do it right your 67 radiator if its a 4sp version may well cover the cost of a correct 68.

You misunderstood. When referring to 67 or 68  car part, the year 67 or 68 typically has to do with production year . 68 production started in the later part of 67 and ended in the later part of 68.  First off a 68 production car will have a 68 production radiator not a narrower 67 radiator from a 67 production car. The wider 68 radiator that your 68 car needs has more cooling capability if needed on hot days. There are reproduction shrouds for ether year. In the original market a nice condition original 67 fan shroud is a 1800.-2500.00 part vs a 68 original version which there are a number of varieties depending on when it was use 68,69 or 70 that sell for smaller fraction of that amount.

Jim,

Only markings I found are on the shroud, and no C7 or C8 numbers. Just  FoMoCo script and  "Top"

Bob,

I just assumed that sine it was an early car, it would have an leftover radiator.  Since I have the correct shroud, any direction on a correct or excellent repro 68 BB radiator?

Don't think you will find that car plants used up parts designed and meant for last years models in allot of cases. Inventory still at the supplier was more likely boxed or packaged and moved into the service replacement system while parts (if they were not designed to be used on the new models) were sold in lots. Much easier for the bean counters to take a loss than deal with them, clean the shelves and prepare to start receiving parts for the new production year while the line was changed and adjusted during the change over

As for a radiator I suggest a wanted ad with a description and part number (even date range if that is important to you ) in the wanted section here and elsewhere.
