Fan and Clutch for a 1969 390
« on: April 04, 2013, 11:20:48 AM »
I own a 1969 Mustang convertible with a 390. The original fan and clutch are long gone and I am trying to replace them but I'm not sure which part numbers I would need. It looks like there were 2 different fan clutches available for my Mustang; C8OE-B or C8OE-C. Can anyone tell me which one would apply to my car?

Also, which fan would I need? Would it be a C8OE-B fan or something else?

Here is some info on my Mustang if this helps:

- Built 4/8/69 in Dearborn
- Four speed
- Non-A/C
- Power steering

Thanks.

Looking at the 72 MPC it shows the C8OE-A (same listed for all 68 390 applications in a 68 MPC version) for AC and the -B or -C as non AC applications

Can't locate my assembly manual copy to cross check

My documentation (second hand and only for 1968---no info for 1969) shows the -b and -c as equivalent applications for all that didn't have A/C or thermactors.

Only the X code

What about Canadian DSO's? S codes (390-4V) to Canada, generally did not get the Thermactor smog systems in 1968.

Poster didn't mention export cars and since few questions tend to relate to those few cars I overlooked that possibility. Would have mentioned if any of the MPC's I have listed that difference and  the export parts list doesn't mention a change in the fan clutch. ;)

Good catch

The MPC is not really accurate as to what came on assembly line. All 390 non AC cars I have seen came with the C8OE B clutch. C8OE B is also the correct fan blade

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Very helpful as usual. So now I'm on the lookout for a C8OE B clutch and fan. If anyone has these parts or knows of anyone who might, please let me know.

In this case, the MPC is accurate - the fan blade "marked C8OE-B" and serviced as C8OZ-8600-A is what is called out for a 390.

However, the blade "marked C8AE-D" (C8AZ-8600-D) is listed for 390 with "extra cooling" "hang-on A/C"

There is nothing listed for a 390 with factory "select-aire" A/C.  Can someone help with that?

First thanks for bringing this back up to the top. One of the side benefits of asking new questions in an older related thread it appears. Back when this threads was started I don't think I had any build sheets for the 390 4 speed no AC application but currently I do and can confirm that this one had the C8OE-B installed originaly

However, the blade "marked C8AE-D" (C8AZ-8600-D) is listed for 390 with "extra cooling" "hang-on A/C"

Can't help with the dealer installed AC question since that would not have been installed at the factory. We would need a number of original cars with the right combination that matched to confirm since I don't think the installation instructions include that information either

As for factory 69 390 with AC I don't currently have a build sheet with that combination. Only thing I can offer is that for 68 both factory AC  and non AC 390 buildsheets show the same C8OE-B
