A/C Compressor Clutch Finish
« on: November 20, 2020, 11:22:27 PM »
I just bought a service replacement A/C clutch, PN C9AZ-2884-A for my driver-but-I-want-it-nice 1968.

It arrived in a flat black finish. Should it be semigloss black? Was it painted with the compressor as single unit, or separately?

May whoever trashed all my A/C stuff forever be cursed. This has been quite a project to track it all down.

That type is typically semi gloss black painted all together. Of course contacts on the back side are not painted. Make sure and confirm that is the correct style for your car. Many 68 /69 units are the two piece electromagnet donut and outer clutch wheel style. They will interchange with each other and get switched out frequently when being serviced. Those are plated bright zinc.

Thanks Bob.

I checked over the cars in the unrestored section before I bought this clutch, and most seem to be this style for the 68 small block. Then I rolled the dice and used the 1975 MPC to find the correct part number and style. It listed two options, this one and a C8AZ-2884-E r/b C9AZ-2884-H. The -H I was able to find, and it’s the other style you mention.

Still not 100% certain what this one was delivered with, but if it makes my belt alignment happy and A/C work, I’m a happy camper.

Paint time this afternoon. And thanks to this site, the power steering pump is getting black too. It’s a TRW, so I think that’s right after reading. I thought they were all that blue color, but I am learning.

And a shout out to WCCC. They are awesome.

The unit was painted as Bob mentioned so you will often find bare shadows of where the arms were located while they were being painted leading to an interesting affect

Think there are one or two threads with pictures of this shown
