Topic: 1965 Brake Drum Blackout

When Styled Steel wheels were installed in 1965 were the brake drums blacked out? If so, what method, I.E. brushed or sprayed on face only or the whole drum? June 65 Dearborn car.

From what I have seen ther were very hastily brushed with black paint. Like just mainly on the face and not the whole exterior drum surface. As far as gloss of the black paint goes due to age I'm guessing that a semi gloss was used?

It was a water based emulsion product that was brushed on in 65-66 as it is described in factory docs. I think it changed to a enamel product in 67-69.  I assume it was more flat then gloss like other water based products like "Tire Black" and driveway sealer products I have seen for the 65/66. The examples i have seen in junk yards and survivor cars were too far deteriorated for me to make a determination based on the examples alone. Just my thoughts. Bob
