Transmission Cross Member Differences - 65-70
« on: December 30, 2018, 02:31:47 PM »
ADMIN NOTE: The following first four posts were separated from another thread and focuses on the removable transmission cross member used on 65-70 Mustangs and Shelby's

67 and 68 were different than 65 and 66. I am not sure if 67 and 68 are different than 69 and 70.

Unlike the 65/66 crossmember the 67-70 will all fit each other however in later 68 production the crossmember was modified with a different notch in the metal for speedometer cable so technically later 68/70 are different.

Did they stay the same?  In a word, no.  From the 60-68 MPC I'm counting six different part numbers. Refer to the attached pictures that cover through 1977

What is interesting to me is the 1967 289 HiPo (including GT350 I presume) starting the year with C6ZZ-A and on 11/1/66 moving to the C7ZZ-C like the C and A code.  The MPC does have its flaws, but I'm wondering if anyone has noticed this change.

C6ZZ-6A023-A
C7ZZ-6A023-A
C7ZZ-6A023-B
C7ZZ-6A023-C
C7ZZ-6A023-D

I can't say that I have seen that change on any early 67 GT350's many of which were built well before the 11/1/66 change date..

Here is a picture of 3 - C-4 / small block manual transmission cross members. I know that there is a technical service bulletin for chaffing on the speedometer cables and that a clip on metal shield was the solution. Could it be that the clip was pre-installed on them after a certain date?
I also have a 3 hole on top version, it may be post 1968? The top cross member in the photo has the installed clip.

This is the difference in crossmembers I was trying to describe in my previous post #1. The bottom crossmember in the picture has the notch style I was referring to but the top one does not. 67 and earlier 68 did not have the notch on one side and later 68-70 did. There are other differences as well but the notch is a very visible difference.

Looking at these two, I'm thinking that the one on top is for a manual transmission, and the lower is for an automatic (with slotted holes).  Is that correct?

Any way to identify 1965 vs. 1966 versions?  Thanks
