upper grille support
« on: October 06, 2020, 08:42:57 PM »
Is the upper grill bar (support) held to the grill with nuts and washers or are they the same retainer's that hold the grille "racetrack" to the grille? Any pictures would be helpful.

I seem to recall the upper bar having threaded studs to hold the mesh in place. I will have to look and take photos tomorrow unless someone else beats me to it.

The upper grill bar has threaded studs. Mine has hex nuts with the built in washer. Here are some photos for you.

My coral has square studs and uses the rectangular push on retainers.

I am trying to determine what is supposed to be there. The Shelby "unique parts catalog" doesn't show it. AMK products catalog shows push on retainers as Coral states but my studs are round and 8-32 thread. I dont see a good picture at all in any of the Unrestored pictures..

The rectangular pal clip is on the threaded stud?

Hope this helps. Since when the car was built (verses early cars) this is from a first of April built car at Dearborn. Don't have the completion date at AO Smith

Very different from the race track

What I found on one I disassembled a while back

+1 . A rectangular pal clip pushed on the threaded stud is what I typically find on unmolested cars. The push nut/pal clip was not doubt faster and given the where it was at didn't need to hold strong. You can leave the nut or clip off and the top rail still stays in place because it is held in tension by the grill mesh.  Given the stud is threaded is why the rectangular clip gets replaced with a hex nut during restoration IMO.  The nut is functionally better but not what was typically used by AO Smith is my opinion.

Are the pal clips the same rectangular clips that are on the "Race track" molding that attaches to the grille?
