68 rear licence plate light
« on: September 03, 2023, 06:26:46 PM »
Has anyone replated a 68 license plate light mounting bracket zinc dichromate without removing the pressed in bulb socket from the assembly? I have seen where the plastic part of the wire covering has had black electrical  tape covering the wire leading into the socket. Also is removing the socket a viable  way to get this part replated ?

The brass socket can be knocked out with a wooden dowel and then the assembly plated.  Ideally, the semi-tubular rivets would be drilled out and the pieces plated separately.  There's potential for chemical leach plating it together.

You will see this mentioned in an article in the Library on restoring Back Up Light Restoration. Just have to look under the particular year section. Articles are all the same.

In your case, as Charles mentioned, your don't have a lip you will need to reform its just a pressure fit and I use a deep socket and a mallet or piece of wood to strike the socket and knock it out of the housing. Real easy
