Cluster combinations for a tacho car.
« on: April 13, 2020, 07:45:05 PM »
My car has a tacho and a speedometer with the trip meter. No problem.

BUT my car also has a factory oil pressure gauge between the big dials. I like it, however I had no sender units with my engine so during the course of tracking one down I discovered the factory parts manual listing one (that looks like a switch sender) for 390’s with the tacho and trip, and one immediately above that listing, (the big bulbous type), for oil gauge cars...

A quick web search revealed the only 68’ clusters with my combination to be on web sites for instrument cluster builders such as Ken Marsola or Tachman.

So I can only assume that my car must have had an oil gauge added later and was running 2 senders from a 1/4 NPT tee piece.  Am I right? Or is there a magical sender that can drive both the idiot light and the gauge?

No oil guage in the middle from factory. That is for clock or clock block-out from factory. Yes, other places have developed different gauges for that opening but not from the factory.

Thanks for the quick reply. So it’s as I guessed A pity as I like that oil pressure gauge there...
So my next question is, did all oil pressure gauge cars have no oil warning light?

Yes.  No Ford had both gauge and warning lights for oil pressure, water temperature, or alternator functions.

So my next question is, did all oil pressure gauge cars have no oil warning light?

When I first read the question above, I was confused.  My reply here is only intended to make sure things are perfectly clear.

The upper row containing three small diameter holes is always, from left to right:

1. Fuel level (analog)
2. Optional clock (blanked out if no clock)
3. Engine temperature (analog)

The lower two large diameter holes, from left to right:

4a. Speedometer - only (standard, no tach)
4b. Speedometer with Odometer (tach)

5a. Oil pressure and alternator current - both analog (standard, no tach)
5a. Tachometer with low oil pressure and low alternator current warning lights (tach)

The low oil pressure and low alternator current warning lights are located above the red arrows in the attached picture.

Yes and it’s all as you say, with the tachometer where it should be etc, except that where the clock or blanking plate should be I have a factory type oil pressure gauge. So as previously suggested, it’s probably been added at some stage by a previous owner. And yes my tachometer has both warning lights, albeit perhaps the oil one wasn’t being used OR 2 senders and wires were being utilised by the PO to make both work.

Anyway I’m satisfied it’s not an OEM configuration and that’s all I was checking on.

Thanks to all.

Do you have a pic?
I'm curious as to what brand OP gauge was used.

Unfortunately I'm away overseas with work now, and with these Chinese Flu quarantines and travel bans, etc., I have no idea when I'll be back in my barn. However this photo from Ken Marsola's website looks like what I have. I have a loose OEM OP gauge that I compared with it when I had it to hand, and as far as I can tell they look the same.
