1968 amber fog lights
« on: September 26, 2020, 08:23:57 PM »
Can anyone confirm whether there were any 1968 non-GT 302 cars that had amber fog lights that were not mounted to the grille but instead were bolted via a post at the bottom of the fog light bezel to the grille opening panel (i.e., near the bottom of the grille)?

My Diamond Blue Fastback has been in my family its entire life -- I don't believe my grandmother or uncle would have put in aftermarket lights (or aftermarket anything) into the car. There is also no mention of fog lights on my Marti report.

So if it wasn't a factory option, were these lights perhaps a dealer option?

I searched online for other 1968 Mustangs with amber lights bolted from the bottom and found one other 302 (green car) -- see photos. However, that car was an East Coast car and mine was built in San Jose.

FWIW the lights on my car have only one electrical bullet plug rather than the more traditional two bullets that the GT fog lights evidently had.

Any insights would be much appreciated.

Clearly not factory.  Either dealer installed or 100% aftermarket.

Lots of those were sold in auto parts stores back in the day. Ford had an accessory light similar to those but larger in diameter. Of course the ones from the Ford dealer would not be considered an option nor correct in concours judging either.

Call it a period aftermarket day two item.

Thanks for the feedback.  Much appreciated.  Royce, do you (or anyone reading) happen to have a photo of the Ford dealer accessory lights?

There happens to be one on eBay right now, but of course that link will expire.  I'll include a few pics

Also the #1 Google search is (drum roll) a CMF link:

This should serve us (me included) that we have covered a lot of ground (and in the case of Midlife a lot of grounds) here.

Depends on the organization and the rules. Can think of a number of clubs/shows were they would be just fine as long as documentation showing that they were available at the time of sale.

Thanks so much for the info, Jeff.  My car is not really concours (although it's a lot closer than many) but at on the other hand I don't want add-ons that are clearly not original unless there is a good reason (e.g., three point seat belts.)  So knowing that there are at least some shows that would view the fog lamps as legit is actually really nice to hear.

Yes, those are the exact light assemblies I have.  I also had the original knob (which was different from the 1968 GT knob) but it looks like I have to find a replacement for that.  Sigh...
