C6 transmission date code?
« on: November 04, 2021, 08:22:05 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a C6 transmission for my early 67 Mustang Shelby GT500 and I need to know what is the date code.

Anyone can help me please?

Kyle.

Kyle, do you have the transmission tag sometimes the number on that can tell about when your transmission was used in the assembly process.

We can start with the C6A and see that it's at least a 66 trans (first year), initially paid for by the large Ford line and the circle dot seems to indicate Feb 28.
Now I'm out of gas on this topic.

Feb 1967? For the casting date of the main case.
Two dots, and what could be a faint "67" inside the small circle.

The transmission doesn't have 67 on it.

Yes I looked at the library section there is a C4 transmission date coding.
My transmission date code is different.
I need to decode my transmission date.

I looked at the Library list for decoding dates and the C4 circle data does not appear to apply.
Just guessing but:
2 dots for February, 28 for a day and the rest is unknown other than the 66 (C6) engineering casting number.
Without other data that would be 2/28/66, 2/28/67, all the way up to the next casting number change for the C6 trans.

It would be interesting to have people with tag numbers to display the tag and their circle data. With more data points we might be able to figure out a trend. Then again, how many were changed during a rebuild?

Tags will provide little in this effort since they don't include an assembly date just a serial number. Same thing as on manual transmissions. Keep track of the numbers in my spread sheet but their pattern depends more on how many of each type was sold during the production year than to a date range unless you compare only like transmissions so a serial number from a Mustang C6 could be different or the same as a Fairlane for example

So my date code is 2/28/66?
There are no 67 stamps there.

Not sure which reply your responding to.

What do you mean by "no 67 stamps there"?

Ford started building production 67 Mustangs in mid August 1966 at Dearborn and Metuchen, San Jose was late August. You may find casting dates a couple of months before any final assembly line build date. If you are concerned that the transmission date seems off, consider that most transmission rebuild shops simply swap yours for a rebuilt one sitting on a shelf. Yours may be one.
