Upper Control Arm Stud/Bolt

Hello,

I am trying to remove the upper control arm on my fastback and I loosened the 3/4 nut in the engine bay but the nut and stud are spinning together.  I assume this isn't suppose to happen.  Any suggestions on how can I remove the control arm?

Apply pressure to the underside of the nut by prying against it and the framework as you turn the nut.  Can you not get another person to hold the bolt/stud on the outside of the fender?

+1  ,,   or try to get a pry bar against the bolt head under the A arm. Maybe even a wrench, though it might be tight to get one in there. ??

It's not a stud, it's a hex bolt.  It has a hex head on the other side.

It's not a stud, it's a hex bolt.  It has a hex head on the other side.
Finally, the correct answer.
To get there, the wheel is off, the coils spring is out, the spindle is removed and the arm is lowered.

Well right now I have a different tool that compresses the spring that replaces the shock.  The spring is compressed up and the perch is disconnected from the control arm and then the control arm is removed out of the way and the spring uncompressed.  So I bought a set of crowsfeet to get up in there with a swivel adapter and long extension to see if that will hold the hex head.

 I HATE compressing the front springs. There is a lot of force bound up there and if the compressor tool fails it can really hurt someone. Use the utmost caution!!

Here are pictures of my home made compressor, and one of Ford's. It uses 5/8 threaded rod and 3/8 plate steel. I can pull a spring in a couple of minutes. I like the Snap-On Tools version (older type I think) which is what I based mine on. I do not recommend using the type with claws. Using those does not work and you take stupid chances.
