1967 Sports Sprint 289 Wheels and Tires
« on: January 18, 2020, 12:42:45 PM »
I just bought a '67 Sports Sprint 'C' Code that is a nice original car.  I want to detail out the car and show it at AACA and MCA.  I can't seem to figure out which tires are correct.  The Marti Report says it came with F70-14 Wide Oval white side walls.  How wide is the sidewall supposed to be?  some sites say 5/8", some say 1", some say "pinstripe".  The only F70-14 that I have found for sale is the "pinstripe" whitewall, but I'm not crazy about how that looks.  Coker, Kelsey, and Universal all sell 695/14 bias tires with either the 5/8" or 7/8" whitewall.  Furthermore, would radials be an instant point deduction?  Also, the car has styled steel wheels (which I like), but originally, since it's a Sports Sprint, it had the deluxe wheel covers.  Would I lose points for having the styled steel wheels on the car?  Any help is appreciated, thanks.

If you haven't done so already, order the Marti Report for your car. It will show how it was ordered and came from the Factory. It is possible that it could have been ordered with the SSW Option, which would have replaced the Deluxe Wheel Covers.

Good luck. And welcome to CMF. You won't regret it.

OOPS ! That's what I get for reading too fast. Thanks. That being the case, then they could have been added by the Dealer (documentation ?), or of course by a Previous Owner.

The Marti Report says F70-14 and wheel covers.  Will I lose points at a show if I have the styled steel wheels and 695/14 Bias ply tires?  And again, what width whitewall is acceptable?  Thanks all

depends on the show venue you choose to attend and the class entered.

Thank you, that's what I thought the tires should look like.  I guess I'll order a set from Coker.  Now, should I keep the styled steel wheels, or get the right hubcaps since they're listed on the Marti Report (and it's a Sports Sprint)?

Well IMHO it depends on you.  How do you plan of using the car? Do you consider restoring a car to mean that its like it left the factory or how it "could have" been built. Good thing its wheel as if you wanted to you could have both.  Plenty of owners have two sets of tires often one for driving and one for shows.

Welcome to the site.

Thank you Jeff.  The car is actually a 28,000 mile original car with one repaint.  My paint is to "punch it up" enough to be a car that I can show and be proud of.  I've shown many cars at AACA and received national 1st place awards, so that is probably where I'll start.  I may go with the two sets of wheels idea.  Either way, I now plan to make it correct and match the Marti Report.
