The Osborne manual shows a sealer between the bracket and the car body. It looks like a circular application. How was this applied? Would a rubber washer/gasket achieve the same or better results?

Should be rope caulk.

I prefer to use 3M Strip-Calk (08578 Black), available from almost all Mustang parts supplier or local automotive stores.

The current formula for 3M strip caulk is butyl-based and nothing like original, it's a sticky mess and I would not recommend it at all.

There are references to 2 rope caulk products in that thread, one shows a picture of the box with the item/part number and another reference to the Eastwood product.
