rear bumper guards

Is there anything that goes between the bumper guard and the rear valance? From what I can determine there is not. So does the metal of the attaching clip butt up against the painted surface of the valance. Which I am assuming would mar the paint job.

AMK sells bumper guard clip nuts with a rubber protector for bumper guards. Part number B-12004.    Factory clip nuts were rubber coated here and on the front bumper to fender clip nuts.
