Topic: speedometer cable routing 70 Dearborn

Couldn't find a picture of the spedo cable routing. I think this car has been "modified", tried routing the cable with the brackets like they are but burnt it up. First picture is the right side of the floor. The bracket must have a use but what? The second on is the bracket on the left side, think it is indexed incorrectly. Should it have a spedo adapter? Thanks

Great, so that bracket is probably right. Just purchased a body assembly manual tonight. Hopefully it will have decent diagrams. Thanks

I think you will need the Chassis Assembly Manual to help you with the speedo cable.

There is also a Body assembly manual,electrical, engine etc.

Shows the wrap around version of the retainer was used here


Not easy to get a shot with the engine in place

Thanks for the help. This is where the cable in melting. I know the insulation is tacky. It is temporary until I figure out what is wrong. The clip on the right side floor doesn't seem to be angled to hold the cable.

Jeffs photo is what I see on rh side 4 speed Dearborn cars and the other type clip is what I see on automatic LH side rear clip.

Is this a 3.91 or 4.30 car?  It looks like it would line up and go through the existing clip if you had the speed reducer on the trans.

350 gears from Ford. Thought about a reducer [if I could find one] it would fix the problem. Did Ford put a reducer on any other vehicle? Meaning is there a less expensive alternative. Beautiful car by the way.

There are alternatives and ones used on other vehicles. Have not priced them recently but they will look different if I recall correctly. Looked for a donor one (had the end cap missing from one I had ) a few years back and didn't find any short cut short of making one that made things easier

Also remember that there are two versions - one for manual and oen for automatic transmissions
