Competition suspension wheel and hubcap discusssion

And Jeff, yes I downloaded the picture you posted.
It's interesting the two wheels are close but not identical.

I'll try and find the wheel post later when I get back to my laptop instead of a cell phone.

So Qman - the pictures you posted are from a different car we see.


Those steel wheels look to be T-Bird solid center wheels.  Have seen owners going back almost 40 years deflating to those when they couldn't fine the originals. Think (for some years back to 65) at least the center holes are larger on the T-Bird wheels. Only been a small handful restored and shown with them visible on the car - without wheel covers in the way

Jeff, you're right about the wheel from my yellow k code convertible.  It wasn't until you mentioned the wheel being from a T-Bird that I remembered what happened. Back when I restored the car I spent allot of time on the K code web site and at that time there was quite a bit of discussion about the whole competition suspension package....maybe you remember that time.  Anyway, I ended up buying two different sets of wheels. One set had five wheels  while the other set had four wheels. Not long after that I drove the car to a national show and took samples of both wheels.  I asked Mr. Perkins if he could help me to determine which wheel was correct for the car. So, the four wheel set is on the car and the spare is from the five wheel  T-Bird set. I'll take a picture of a wheel that is on the car and have my son post that picture later today. I'm sorry for the foul up and I hope this gets us back on track.  Qman

Yes how understanding and knowledge has changed over the ages. I appreciate greatly you being candid as many might not be so forthcoming. In any case the car is such an unusual and pretty car.

Those are incorrect lugnuts . Someone used common replacement chrome lugnuts because the originals are so hard to find.  It took a special lugnut that was long so that it would protrude through the hubcap. 67 Shelby with base wheels used the same thing (different cap).It is the top one in the picture . It has a different countersunk base designed for standard steel wheels compare to the other two.

 Bob, the someone who put common lug nuts on those wheels was me.  Even though I'm a  gold card judge I was not aware of the different lug nuts. Now I have a question for you....I've talked to a couple of guys with competition suspension mustangs and they all mentioned having trouble getting those hubcaps on the wheels.  Have you heard of this problem and do you have any suggestions?

I still learn something new about the cars everyday so your not the only one. Sorry I ahave not heard about any issue different then is typical with fighting any deluxe hubcap on the steel wheel without damaging the outside edge portion of the hubcap. Probably a little more difficult indexing the longer lug nuts to the holes on the hubcaps. FYI Jim at Shelby parts and restoration (acman63 on this forum ) had made up  a few sets of the extremely rare lug nuts and I believe he may have one or too sets left. If you need them I would not miss the opportunity as in my 30+ years of highly networked Shelby/Mustang specific parts savaging have only only seen about 5 original sets for sale and bought 3 of them but missed the other two. The ones Jim made could pass for genuine.
