Cowl paint details - 70 NJ
« on: July 03, 2019, 11:42:43 PM »
OK, so to switch to a June 70 Metuchen Boss 302 like mine, all of the area under the cowl vent panel would be semi gloss black, yes? That is the black was just and extension of the engine bay paint and went up and over the firewall pinch weld right to the windshield opening, right?

I ask because mine was painted body coloured in the resto before I acquired the car and I have never been sure this is correct.

Yes the visible surface of the cowl above the pinch weld to the firewall would typically have been engine compartment and front wheel well black.

WIll post some pictures tomorrow of the area under the top vent panel so that you ahve some help if you choose to redo the area

Here are some examples of what appears to be the typical pattern the painters at that station used on most of the 70 NJ Mustangs

Hope this helps

Blue examples are two different cars

On a late (June) NJ Mach in white have the same black out under the cowl as a Boss or would it be white body color under there?

Thanks,
Dave

Sorry, may have found my answer. It looks like Mach 1s had the engine bay black out extended to the windshield under the outer cowl panel. Hope I’m right???

If you notice there was a pass of the black along the lower edge of the windshield opening so that the body color did not show in the gap between the dash pad and the windshield. Also blacks out the body color that could show around the defroster openings as done at other plants
