Removing 1966 Mustang Grill Molding
« on: July 30, 2019, 01:13:30 PM »
Does anyone know how to remove the aluminum grill molding after taking off the center joint cover?  Is there a trick to it???  I have the center joint cover off but fail to see how they come off after removing the sheet metal screw on each side.

Thanks for looking!

wide flat plastic pry bar works for me. wire type fasteners are pushed into a hole to hold moulding in place.

Can't figure it out!  Have the pry bar but don't really see what to pry on!  Better not mess it up since I don't understand how it is attached.

I like photos of where to start.  Anyway, thanks for offering advice.

Cheers,

Thanks all.  Finally successfully removed them.  Was able to slide each one left and right respectively and then pry them out.  Actually came out nicely.  Now to clean and reinstall.  Just doing a thorough cleaning underneath as sometimes love BUGS in Central Florida get in there during a cruise!  One day I shall find some NOS to change out.  Can old OEM ones be refinished with argent paint and still look good???

Can't do much with the visible anodized surface or damage in the surface but a fresh coat of argent on the painted surface might improve the overall look.

Even though your car is a Shelby, most of the car is documented in the 66 Mustang Assembly Manuals. I strongly recommend you get a set.

By the way hold on to your clips. I found that the reproduction clips don't fit the moldings very well. (atleast in my case). I cleaned my originals up and shot them with a quick coat of silver paint. the moldings are worth getting a set of NOS. re painting the argent is about all you can do to improve originals..

If there is no road rash on the part I’ve had good success getting the part refinished by someone here in Michigan that specializes in stainless straightening/polishing and aluminum anodizing. There are tricks in prep as well as post dip.  But road rash is bad, a newly anodized part is like putting a spotlight on the rash.  If you are interested shoot me a PM and I’ll make the connection.  He usually has a long list of people in line, a testament to his work

Thanks guys.  GREAT suggestions.  I shall have to source some original clips since when the restoration was done, Taiwan STUFF was used!  LONG story!  Been trying to acquire and change every part back to OEM or NOS.  I shall look for some OEM or original grill molding to work with.  The ones I pulled off are indeed "made in Taiwan".
