1965-66 Shock Paint Daub colors
« on: May 25, 2018, 01:07:57 PM »
I'm looking for shock paint daub marks for 2 cars:

1-
1965 San Jose built March 1965 fastback 289 A code NON GT 4spd

2-
1966 Dearborn built January 1966 convertible 289 C code automatic

Didn't see anything exact in previous threads.

Any help?

Your fastback I believe should be two teal spray dots.  What are the numbers on the springs?

I'm looking for the front and rear shock paint daub colors.  I have the correct colors for the springs already which we found on the springs.

Chris and I have been discussing the subject a little through PMs and it appears that there may have been a group of shocks that were possibly unmarked with a paint daub in 65 unlike later years.

Ford books so far do not really help and buildsheets show the vast majority of cars (typical cars) lacked any identification on the buildsheets. During this period the shocks must have been housed in bins waiting for installation and the bins marked some other way.

Best we have at the time is that applications like GT's, K code, exports and possibly 6 cylinders received some marking but this would have left the majority of the cars build with no daub ID

Similar practices were used on some other markings in later years so it does not seem to be a wide possibility

My Aug 64 car with handling package doesn't have paint daubs on the front or rear shocks. My June 65 coupe with handling package doesn't have paint daubs front or rear. My June 65 convertible without handling package doesn't have paint daubs on the front shocks. Rear shocks were changed to adjustable shocks so can't tell what the originals had.

Mike how did you determine that the cars were ordered with the handling package?  Original window sticker?

Is there a reference or assembly manual for 64 1/2 cars that includes the installation of shocks?  Conspicuously missing from the chassis assembly manual.

I don't know to what detail you are looking for, but the 64 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual has several pages on shock installation. It does not include paint dabs. That info was on the build sheets.

The detail I'm looking for is full specific engineering numbers for the shocks for a given R.P.O. such as C4ZE-18A045-A, not just an arrow pointing to the front shock on the 8cyl front suspension page showing only the group/base number 18A045.  For example, the way that the electrical assembly manuals identify full specific engineering numbers for distributors and generators for each R.P.O.
