Steering Wheel - 1968 GT
« on: April 12, 2019, 10:52:40 AM »
I have an early San Jose S-Code with a standard interior.  Marti Report lists a deluxe steering wheel but not a deluxe interior.  Does that mean I should have the attached steering wheel even though the dash and shift knob are standard?

Appreciate any assistance you can provide...thanks!

Tony : If that is a picture of the 1968, Deluxe, Simulated Wood Grain Steering Wheel (i'm not that familiar with 68's), then yes, that is what you should have, according to your Marti Report.

Interestingly, the 1968 Sales Brochure that I have, dated 12/67, does not show the Deluxe Steering Wheel as a separate Option. However, the "Mustang Option and Accessories" pages in the 1968 Model Introduction/ Facts book (the fact books were normally available at time of Model Introduction), does show the Deluxe Steering Wheel as a separate, "Regular Production Option" (RPO), as well as being part of the Interior Decor Group (see attached copy of page from same).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob.  The picture is what I believe to be the 1968 deluxe steering wheel but I wouldn't claim to be an expert on this since there's so much bad information out there and I'm just getting into this.  It just seemed very odd that this would have been an option with the standard interior as it seems out of place.  I'll have to install one and see if I can live with it.  Maybe put the deluxe in it for shows because I assume I would take a hit for it if it didn't match the Marti.

Tony : I believe that if you did install the Deluxe Steering Wheel, it would probably raise more eyebrows, and then you would have to present a copy of your Marti to confirm that it did, in fact, come from the Factory that way. It is my understanding that, at least for MCA shows, the Marti is not supposed to be used for judging.

Just something you might want to check into.

The pictured steering wheel is correct and was a stand alone option in 1968.

Great...I thought they looked at the Marti reports.  I can't picture that steering wheel looking good with the standard interior.

Thanks Danny!

Tim : The instrument cluster would be camera case finish with the "stand alone" Deluxe Steering Wheel Option, but wood grained if the Interior Decor Option was chosen.
