Best method to remove rocker stripes
« on: March 13, 2019, 06:56:18 PM »
On a Mustang GT or a Shelby that has the stripes running along the rockers, what is the best method to remove the stripes? I am asking about the taped stripes, not painted.
Thanks

Depends on how old they are. Guess you will be experimenting with a couple of methods to see which will work.  Have seen others use some heat from a hair dryer or if your very careful. Remember what ever you use to peel it away from the surface will not scratch the paint you likely want to keep nice.

3M sold a disc that attached to a drill or buffer. Think it was designed for pinstripes but might work on wider stripes. Care must also be taken and instructions read and followed.

Might see if some wax and grease remover along the edge would start the lift process by weakening the adhesive.

Sure others may have other ideas and experience to share

Suggest you visit or call a graphics/sign maker and ask if they have RAPIDTAC adhesive remover. If they do, ask if you can purchase a small quantity. Find a metal can with a screw-on top to put it in.  Before using on your vehicle's stripes, find a small inconspicuous area you can test to assure it won't affect your paint...It shouldn't but it's always best to be sure.  Apply with a cloth, perhaps cheesecloth, allow it to soften the vinyl, then use a plastic razor blade (yes, they make such a thing) or a Pilkington blade with a chisel end (auto glass installers use them). Take your time and allow the RAPIDTAC to do its thing. It will also clean up any adhesive residue.
Here's a link on eBay that shows the product and gives a good description of same: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rapid-Tac-Rapid-Adhesive-Remover-1-Gallon/232537230940?epid=1300212926&hash=item36244c8e5c:g:0pAAAOSwR6RaAhln

this is the eraser wheel Jeff is referring to. the 3M version is the best. Ive used these many times in the body shop and they work well. I removed the large z28 stripes from a 80 Camaro with one of these things. Mixed with some wax and grease remover and a heat gun these are some good options.
