Air Cleaner lid gasket
« on: January 17, 2019, 10:03:34 AM »
Hey, Everyone:

I am restoring my air cleaner for my 1965 GT A code.  I ordered the air cleaner lid gasket c5zz-9673 and it's nothing like the original fuzzy gasket.  Is anyone reproducing ones that match the factory?

What do you mean by "fuzzy"?

My original lid had a fuzzy fabric type gasket.  Kinda reminds me of steel wool.  It wasn't made out of rubber like the replacement I saw on-line.

I believe the originals are a soft rubber.

That description reminds me of a RFI gasket used on electronic equipment, possibly a previous owners fix. After 50 or so years, anything is possible.
I believe the originals are a soft rubber.
From the several original lids I have stashed around here, it "was" soft rubber.

The rubber will get hard after 50 years also... probably a combination of aging/cracking.

The reproduction isn't exactly like the original.  I usually like to save originals and re-glue them in if possible.

Thanks for the clarification, Guys.  I guess I'll use the rubber gasket and not look back  ;)

I reexamined the gasket last night and you guys are 100% right.  It was crusty dried out rubber.   :o
