Is the fresh air vent assembly on driver side suppose to be in plastic or metal ? In a 68 fastback Dearborn april 16th !

Sorry for bringing this 'old' thread back into life, but I think it is appropriate.
I have a '67 fastback, but the pictures showed above are the same as the assembly that is/was mounted in my car  .

I want to know what the finish supposed to be for the bracket which is mounted at the side...
Bare metal? or Black paint?
The same question for the rod that goes through the assembly.
Black paint?

Also,.... can those parts be dissembled?
Can the rubber(?) joint be removed from the metal part in the middle of the assembly (which is, I assume, painted black)

Is it 'normal' that the new fresh air gasket (mounted between the cowl and the assembly) is a 'white' foam?
That doesn't seem to be the 'same' material as shown in the above picture (which is the same what I have seen/noticed on my fresh air vent).

Bare metal on ALL metal parts except the zinc screw stop. Yes, I have had mine apart, though I did not drill out the two rivets holding the cable bracket onto the plastic. The keeper on the end of the rod is spring steel so it will be blackened in color. The screw that clamps the cable will be phosphate/oil in my opinion (darker color than the bare steel). My flapper was rusted/pitted badly so I epoxy-coated it with JB weld and left it that grey/black color but it would typically be bare steel originally.
Yes, the rubber flapper can be removed.

Is it possible to take that rod out of the assembly?
I don't want to break anything, therefore I ask it first.
Is the rod welded to the flapper, or is it supposed to be loose? And can it pulled out?
After cleaning up, I can see that the back side of the flapper was painted black.
Can that be the case?
The rod and the bracket are indeed unpainted.

Rod is not welded but likely seized with rust. Be careful. I don't recall having too much problems taking it apart.

I found a weird one in my Pil-O-Parts that I believe came out of a 68. The main case is steel, the vent portion is plastic and screwed on, with many of the finishes in cad. This makes me think this is a service item.

I think you will find your vent is a 65/66 but will let the guys in the know help you I.D. It

And so it is! I keep finding new 'treasures' that I haven't seen in decades as noted by my for sale ad.
According to some sites I found using the search term "65-66 Mustang fresh air vent" it's a 65 vent.
