HiPo carb rebuilder
« on: October 03, 2018, 09:00:20 PM »
The C4of-al carb on my '65 HiPo needs a rebuild after sitting on a shelf for several years and I'm wondering if there's a person or business favored by forum members for this?  I recall many years ago that Pony Carbs was used by some Mustang owners, but since they closed their doors I've not heard of anyone who's taken their place.  Thanks for all suggestions!

KPcarbs (Kurt) does good work except he bead blasts the original finish of the aluminum housing.

Beware

Some of the plating finishes are incorrect also  (zinc w/dichromate that should be clear zinc, etc...)

I have also seen some replacement fasteners used that may be slightly different than original.

Here some pictures of either an NOS or an early take off showing some details.  Unfortunately many people remove all the steel parts they can and replate them all zinc dichromate. Really stands out as incorrect and unoriginal. But its just easier and most owners just trust that what they get back is correct  ::) and the rebuilders don't change their ways since no one calls them back and asks why they restored their carb that way.  in the reply above is a good example of this IMHO. Plus the coloring of the dichromate some of them are using is really rough on the eyes and pulls your eyes to notice the issues even more

Take notice of the different finishes on some of the hardware and covers in the pictures below

Do have some new 2 barrels out in the garage somewhere that I should get some pictures of also since they share many of the same parts and because of this, finishes

Thanks for the pictures, everyone.  Hate the look of that "goldish" dichromate.  I have two CAof-al carbs, one restored several years ago, and one that's dirty but original.  I think I'll tackle a rebuild myself of the latter so I can run it on my car instead of the one with the bright gold-colored replacement parts.  It just looks sooo not right with the new dichromate.

Its not the fact its "new" dichromate it's the plater and their choices. Remember you can tone it down by washing the individual part in vinegar when the dye is fairly fresh/new. Doesn't work as well years later.  Happens quickly but it can be done to mute it allot and make it look more like it did originally

Has been mentioned a few times like this one ;)

I’ve posted this before but if you want to clean the aluminum housing, Pinesol works well. I have never done a carb but did test on other cast aluminum and it worked great. It’s common for motorcycle carbs, beware that it will remove plating also
