Correct Radiator for a 64.5 DCode?
« on: January 22, 2012, 09:25:17 PM »
My radiator is in sad shape and I had planned to have it re-cored.  Looking at pictures of other cars though, now I'm not sure if it's even a Ford radiator.  I know the car had some major front end damage before I owned it and the radiator support has been replaced (no extra cooling louvers).  Do you guys think this is an older, aftermarket radiator? I cannot find any Ford stampings or part numbers on it.  If this one is not correct, where's the best place to get a rebuild-able core?  Thanks.

John

John,

I had the same question a while back concerning my June 19 Dearborn convertible (auto). See this earlier post:http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=2574.msg17641#msg17641

The radiator for a 64 1/2 Dearborn car would have the squared-off tank straps on top. My correct radiator, I finally got (initially bought an incorrect radiator for $$$) has the identification stamping on the driver's side radiator support as shown in the last picture/post in the link attached. I got lucky and got my radiator from Glazier's Mustang Barn knowing that they had a 64 1/2 parts car available. You may want to check with them to see if they have another. If you need assistance with what correct markings you should have on the radiator, let me know.

Did all radiators have the trans cooler built in even if the car was equipped with a manual transmission?

Manual trans cars wouldn't have the cooler tank/fittings in the radiator.

Here are some pictures of the original 64 1/2 Dearborn radiator I purchased from Glazier's Mustang Barn and then had restored by All Classic Mustang.

Radiator details:

64 V8 Dearborn, auto trans, DEP C4ZE 8005 - B1, date 4AB(1964 January 2nd week)
NOS Core with correct bucket header

Hope this helps.

I also have an early 65 (Oct 64 build) set up with AT. What I'd like to know is if the brass (rubber hose) fittings for the transmission lines are painted with the radiator or not please? And also which are the correct clamps? The crimp type or the type with the metal thread bolt and nut set up?

Is this for your December car or another earlier one like the OP's

Great link. Thanks! Any idea if the barbed fittings on the radiator for the oil lines were painted with the radiator or not?
