As for mounting it and maybe not wanting to drill holes, I wonder if a magnet would work?

...or build a custom mounting bracket that uses existing holes (e.g. trunk hinge bolts, trunk latch bolts or the likes)

That's a great Idea.  I'm going to do this... I have a NOS Trunk light on my shelf for 15 Years doing nothing... because I never wanted to drill the holes.  I'll just epoxy (which is removable) some rare earth magnet(s) on the back..
