'66 289 fuel pump bolt removal
« on: July 09, 2018, 06:59:09 PM »
I've tried every combination of tools I have to remove the rear 9/16" bolt on the fuel pump......looking for suggestions....I've tried for several hours and think I might have to remove the oil sending unit.  The car has power steering which makes it more difficult with the hoses positioned where they are.

Thanks.....

1/4" ratchet with a long extension and a shallow 6 point socket.

A 1/4" wobble extension with a short socket is what I used. Worked great.

In 1980, I had to change my fuel pump alongside the road on a HOT August day out in the middle of New Mexico, my car also has AC and power steering. I accomplished it somehow with only a basic 3/8" tool set. I remember having problems but I got it done. Perhaps I pulled other things out of the way to get in there but I still remember how tough it was tough to get in to that one.

Not easy...but a shallow 9/16" socket on a 1/4" extension did it.......you have to keep the head of the bolt against the flange during installation to avoid the socket jamming up.

Thanks again....

For install, put the front bolt in first, get it mostly in, then align the pump with the other hole and push down to get it level.  Back bolt can be finger-started and then tightened.
