Auto trans chrome "T" shifter handle differences
« on: May 06, 2018, 10:40:44 AM »
I've got a small collection of automatic transmission chrome "T" shifter handles and there is one that is larger than the other.  I wanted (still want) to identify them properly so that I don't mislead anyone when I offer them for sale (or give them away).  So I went to the 60-68 MPC and see that C5ZZ-7213-F is "from 6/1/65" which is rather late in the model year.  It is listed for 65-67, but I'm curious as to what was available before that date.  For 68 there is a C8ZZ-7213-A chrome handle.  Then I went back to the 65 MPC and see a C5ZZ-7213-D listed, which makes sense given the from 6/1/65 note in the 68 MPC.  The 65-72 MPC lists a C5ZZ-7213-M "kit" that includes a C8ZZ-7213-A T-bar, and that too makes sense.

To summarize by date this is what I come up with for the 65-67 chrome handles:

C5ZZ-7213-D 65 MPC
C5ZZ-7213-F 68 MPC
C8ZZ-7213-A 72 MPC

None of the handles I have have a part number anywhere, so I guess we need to go by dimensions or other visual clues.  The attached PDF shows the two styles that I have, with dimensions.

I would appreciate any insight that you might have.

This one mentions that the reproductions are not as "slim" as the 65-67 version.

I can only think of 5 different types....

1. Thin, Smaller T-Handle, Tapered, Chrome 64 1/2 Only.
2. Typical T-Handle (Most Seen), Tapered, Chrome '65-'68  (The one that is most heavily reproed.)
3. Slanted T-Handle, Thin, Vinyl Wrapped '67-'68 (Keyed to interior color) - Possibly '67 Only?
4. Larger T-Handle, Slightly Tapered, Thick arms, Chrome, Mid- '68-'70
5. Shelby T-Handle, Large Round Wood Ends, Embossed Cobra in wood '68-'70.

I can't think of any others...

From Your PDF file, The one on the left looks like a Typical #2, The one on the right looks like #4.

:o)
