Topic: 64 1/2 Seat Belt Eye Bolt Finish

To All:

I am restoring a 1964 1/2 Mustang and wondering what the correct finish is for the seat belt eye bolts. I thought they would be clear zinc, but on close examination, it appears they may have been gold (zinc dichromate). Does anyone know for sure how to have these correctly plated?

Most of the originals I've seen look like cadmium plating.

To my untrained eye, zinc dichromate looks almost exactly like cadmium plating. Would zinc dichromate be an acceptable substitute in a restoration or do I need to source cadmium plating?

Consider bead blasting then a dull zinc finish.

No plain zinc would be much closer. Allot depends on how the metal was prepped but if its plated bright zinc or is to "bright" you can dull it down using a number of methods like acid based wheel clearer. Just a quick rinse with the product until you get a duller final look
