Hopefully this has not been discussed previously. Searches turned up nothing.
There appears to be two different 1967 headlight switch knobs and two 1968 headlight switch knobs.
The Ford MPC and Mercury MPC indicate two different part numbers, one for each year. C7ZZ-11661-A and C8ZZ-11661-A.
1967 knobs are 1.178" in diameter, 1968 knob is 1.135" in diameter. The grooves are distinctly different between the years as you can see.
Pictured 1967 (2) on left and 1968 (2) on right in photo. Scott Drake makes only the 1967 knob without the hollow cavity on the reverse.
The only casting numbers noticed are on both of the 1968 knobs, which have 10979 inside the cavity

Does it have to do with the one style used on the Cougar headlights vs the Mustang headlights? I thought that there was a higher capacity breaker in the Cougar version.

Yes, the headlight switch is different on a Cougar for the quad headlight draw.
The knob, bezel, and nut should all be the same, on the headlight switch assembly for Mustang and Cougar.

Remember, starting in 1968 interior components started getting smoother, less sharp, more flush mounted, and overall safer for the occupants.
These 1968 knobs are more rounded on the surface.

I would also agree on a supplier change or design change to save pennies. Less metal costs less money and adds up when talking about numbers in the 100,000's of units.

Thanks Scott for sharing
Going to alter/adjust the title just a little so it does not rad as if there are four different versions for each year ;)
