Topic: 1968 Mustang AM radio with fader ?

 Hi all, I just picked up a nice condition AM radio for my 68' console. I have a few questions, the first being that it came with a fader harness for the front/rear speakers. I searched the internet and it seems this is for a Cougar application? I am curious if it was also available for the Mustang? Secondly, there is a small toggle switch on the side of this radio as well as an additional red wire. I wanted to see if that is factory or something added? I guess this was likely out of a Cougar? This radio is in great shape so I can only imagine it was an early take off? Also, what are the measureable differences between standard and console radio knobs? I am thinking these are likely standard knobs, and were there any differences between the Cougar and Mustang radio knobs themselves?? Thanks!

Since this could be a dealer installed option I don't see any reason why it could not be installed in a Mustang that year.

Knobs were specific for consoles so believe both are the same for the same application - with Console

Have never seen a toggle switch like that on a factory radio  Might want to check how its wired in and the connections for indications if its factory or add on

The shape of the second knobs and the brown adjuster don't seem right for 68 mustang with a console. Also there should be a ID number stamped on the housing such as 8TPZ for an AM radio.

 I do believe this toggle switch was installed from Ford. I opened the radio and the toggle switch is integrated with other components, yet I have no clue what it could be for.

The radio is marked 8TPZ .. I also do not intend to use the fader switch/harness, although it is quite unique.

The phono plug below the switch is also not the norm. Odd that both wires are tan - IMHo a suggestion that the items may have been added

Jeff : That was my first thought also, but that would be pretty cumbersome to turn on and off. Then I thought that possibly it was an MP3/Ipod input, but then why a switch ?

Clueless on this one. I hope you can appreciate the condition of this 50 year old part. It still retains ink stamps, etc. and even smells like fresh electronics. :-) I am at a loss but either way this radio will likely be converted for the hidden modern internals for AM/FM and auxiliary input. With so many changes, add-ons, and options I just thought I stumbled across something factory or original Ford that I haven't seen before. Sounds like this must have been added, for what reason I'm unsure.

Fifty years ago, I did this all the time, radio modifications (I added a console mounted rear speaker to my 66 Mustang Fastback AM radio in 66), stereo add-ons, TV enhancements, design and install an intercom system. It was easy then. Now, not so much.
So what do you do? Get another 8TPZ radio "without the mods"? That would be the correct answer. Live with it? For a daily driver, sure. Concourse driven? OK (?). What level of Mustang do you desire?
