Horns: Paint Daub
« on: June 27, 2016, 11:04:51 AM »
This yellow paint on the Mustang horn does not look to me like it was put on at the plant or the supplier. Has anyone seen this before ?  It looks more like s previous owner was using the horn for a test spray of the color for some other project. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Have not seen that spray on any others nor have seen/heard of that finding by any other owner that I can recall. Would suggest that it not be reproduced at this point (document as you have) until you find other confirming original examples from same plant and time. Easy to add later if you can find support

If the horn in question is for your Dearborn convertible, I figured I'd offer this up if would be any use to you. This came off of my June '66 Dearborn coupe and it was the only marking I found on either of my horns:

'66 GT Fastback,  Metuchen, 10/28/65, 289-4v w/4spd
'66 Sprint Coupe, Dearborn, 06/11/66, 200ci w/ C4
'91 LX Convertible, Dearborn, 08/91, 5.0 w/AOD
'92 LX Hatchback, Dearborn, 5.0 w/AOD

Thanks.  Now I know what to look for in an original horn, a date code, no paint daubs.

I've seen these before as well. Wonder if anyone has remade a stamp like this for the show circuit?? Shouldn't be as hard as the "paint OK" stamp as less detail?

There are different date formats and placement.  It's not the same for all.

Yes I've made some to fill the need at the time

As far as the paint inspector stamp - depends on which one and year ;) For me every detail has to be drawn so its about the number of features and details. IMHO can't just type out the details using a specific font and call it good/close  ::)

Agree with you there Jeff. My next project is my July built Dearborn coupe. I'm sure the horns were touched up over the last few decades so I'll have to investigate if the stamping/format from the June 66 Dearborn example would be close.

Yeah, Those are typical '65-'66 Horn Ink Stamped Date codes.  It would be nice if someone would make up a "Stamp Set" with those letter/number fonts.  I'm more than sure Speegle has already done it (had those fonts stamps made)...I don't ever remember seeing a paint Daub on the bottom though on any ones I've ever seen.. That is a new one..  :o))

I realize this post is a year old, but wanted to keep all the info together. Getting ready to restore my horns and noticed I have one as pictured by the OP (yellow paint daub). My horns are original to my car which is a March Dearborn built fastback. The paint daub is only in the LOW pitch horn. Maybe this was to distinguish between the HI and the ye(LOW) horns? My cars DSO if that matters is Indianapolis. Thanks, Bill

It looks like the same shade of yellow. Both sprayed at a close distance. Well, that's two examples.
