67 Tilt/Swing Away Column Seals
« on: June 20, 2021, 08:02:34 PM »
Hi all,

I tried searching the website but ended up more confused than before. I am trying to reinstall my tilt/swing away column on my 1967 GTA 390. I believe the column only had one seal on the two piece bracket that mounts to the inside of the firewall. I ordered a new seal and also received a one piece metal plate. I also found a second seal in my parts box I must have purchased at one point from Branda that is labeled "steering column to floor" (right side of the attached photo). Do I need these for my application? Also, the column insulator fit the exterior tube but didn't seal very close to the inside steering rod so I just made a piece of foam to fit inside the tube blocking the air flow. Thanks in advance for any information.

If you haven't got a copy of the 1967 Mustang Chassis Assembly manual, you should consider getting one, and the full set of manuals as well. what you seek appears to be there on page 47, a bit washed out, but it may answer your questions. Also, try the Ford Car Parts (aka MPC) files in the "ConcoursMustang.com Official 67 Mustang Article List".

The last I knew, the seal wasn't being reproduced and using the old one over again is the only solution.
You can make repairs using black "The Right Stuff" (by Permatex).

you need the flat-ish gasket and a two-piece metal bracket that is held together with two nut-bolt combos then attaches to the firewall with four screws

Attached are copies from the 1960-68 MPC, and two pages from the 1967 Chassis Assembly Manual which Jim referred to. Both show the parts in question.

Hope this helps.
