Hot Idle Compensator
« on: October 07, 2010, 08:49:30 PM »
On a 66 C-Code,  what is the function of the Hot Idle Compensator, in the PCV hose to the carb spacer on A/C equipped cars?

How does it work?

Is it just basically an intentional vacuum leak that opens and closes depending on engine bay temps?

I guess that would cause 2 idle speeds if open or closed?

Believe you have a decent general understanding of the principles. Engine compartment temp changes, valve opens or closes and in turn effects the idle, keeping the engine running through these temperature changes

Thanks Jeff,
So I thought it was either on or off, but based on your description, it's propotional to temperature, right?

When the ambient underhood temp increases to a certain point the bi-metalic strip on the hot idle compensator opens a rubber needle - brass seat metered orifice, causing what is essentially a vacuum leak of a predetermined amount into the intake system.  This extra air will in turn cause the idle speed to increase, moving more air through the radiator and water through the cooling system due to increased fan and water pump speed the result being  the motor will cool down to the point where the ambient underhood temp is lower, and the valve closes and the vacuum leak will stop, returning the engine to a normal idle speed.   This cycle repeats itself over and over. Obviously this will only help during periods of engine idle . Remember, this was engineered in the early sixties and in theory is workable.  What normally happened is that IF the little rubber needle valve did lift from the brass seat and cause the idle to increase, it sometimes would not seat properly when  cooler, and caused an eratic idle.  Most were tossed in the garbage back in the day.  In the real word this little device probably caused more problems than it solved!  It had a somewhat short life, was kind of a band-aid fix, and was replaced with a bigger and better cooling system as more and more Fords products were sold with factory AC.  I do not remember the idle speed increasing in proportion to the temp.

Good explanation Murf.  Does anyone know if this was installed on '65 C codes w/ a/c?  Or was it just a '66 thing?  Just wondering.

I'm almost positive that Mannel's book shows it on '65 and '66 CCodes.

It's also used on 64 1/2 cars. My June 64 convertible is an open emissions car meaning there is no PCV valve but instead it has the road draft tube off the intake manifold (oil fill is on the timing chain cover too, so unique valve cover configuration in that neither have holes). So my hot idle compensator comes off the carb spacer and is attached to a short piece of hose with two Corbin clamps, as shown in Mannel's book in the Ford diagram (example with incorrect clamps below).

Believe your "PCV adapter with male thread" is just the end of the C5ZZ-6A666 PCV

The compensator block's number is 379573-S a hardware number

Elbow is another hardware number of 37854-S

Clamps are all 18572

Illustration is of a 65 system rather than a 66

The 66 Engine Accessories shows a slightly different setup, no threaded PCV valve, but the clamps are 97331-S35 and are available from AMK.
The compensator block's number is 379573-S a hardware number
That part is listed as a "T" but used as a housing.
Elbow is another hardware number of 37854-S
Believe the part number should be 378754-S (ref Ford Standard Utility Parts, Jan 65, pg 39, type 6)

Yes that (no threads) would be one of the differences between the pictures posted and a 66 system if that is what one is doing - besides the lack of the threaded adapter

Thanks on the number Though it may not matter. Just dropped a number transposing from the picture to the post :(
