Power Brake pedal height
« on: March 26, 2016, 01:26:56 AM »
I think my brake pedal height is too low. It is a power brake car. The brake pedal is in the same plane as the accelerator pedal. So you can just slide your foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal without lifting it at all. I think the brake pedal should be higher. I'd like some feedback as to how some of your brake pedals relate to the accelerator. On all of the modern cars I have checked the brake pedal is from one to two inches higher than the accelerator pedal.  Any input from your cars and experience would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Attempted to get a measurement for you this evening.  As you might guess this is an approximation since the padding, carpet and floor mat used can make some difference, but With the normal padding and carpet And the Ford PONY floor mats in place the distance from the floor mat to the top of the brake pedal is 4 inches give or take maybe a 1/4 inch.  This was on an Oct 30 65 scheduled build date 1966 Mustang convertible if those particulars may make any difference. This measurement was taken on the top surface outside edge (your left if you were driving the car) of the brake pedal pad at the center to the mat.   What does your measure?  Hope this is of some help to you. And yes, the brake pedal is higher than the accelerator although I was unable to start the engine due to the way I have the car stored.

Murf: thanks for taking the time. Your measurement confirmed what I had suspected, that my brake pedal is too low. My measurement is 3" measured the same way you did but with no floor mat. I am thinking that a floor mat would be about 1/4" thick or so that means I a short somehow by over 1'.  Thanks a lot.

I think I found the culprit in the brake pedal being to low. Looking under the instrument panel I saw that the rubber bumper stop on the brake pedal is about 7/8" away from the brake pedal support bracket. Can I assume that the rubber bumper should be lightly touching the support so that it stops the brake pedal from travelling up any higher? ? If so, that would be the result of what problem? The rod coming out of the booster is too short? Are there a variety of lengths of the rod I should be looking for? By the way, the brakes work great, it is just that the pedal is too low. It is at the height of the accelerator pedal. Thanks for any help.

Here is a picture of my power brake pedal which is higher than the
gas pedal, it measures 3 3/4" from the floor mat to the back part of the bar.

Perfect photo.  Thank you.  That picture is worth a thousand words.  Now I know where I need to get, I just have to figure a way to get there.
