Original Wheel Cylinder?
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:21:45 PM »
Does this look original or is it a replacement? Passenger side rear wheel cylinder. Had two white dots on it after soaking it in evaporust. If it is, is it advisable to rebuild or just purchase a new one?

Is the bleeder 1/4 or 3/8?

All the reproductions I have seen are 3/8". If it's 1/4, its likely factory.

If it's original, I'd rebuild it.

Originals have the number 38787 cast on the side. Repo 1/4" bleeders have been available for the past 1-2 years...check NPD. Not to say yours is a recent repo but possibly replaced back in the 70's or 80's.

I doubt they're a repo. NPD does offer a concourse correct unit, but they're 100.00 and they wouldn't accidentally wind up on the vehicle. The parts store replacements run about 10.00. The replacements I have seen via most parts stores have a 3/8" bleeder. I haven't seen any with the 1/4" bleeder.

Consider that Bendix and Kelsey/Hayes were OEM suppliers, the castings are not usually the same.

Repo was the wrong word, should have said replacement. I went through this a couple years ago and according to PO's service records, he replaced them in '74. At the time I only came up with 38787 but as Charles mentions, 2 vendors may have different numbers.

If OP turns out to have originals, I would rebuild also.

Those numbers are on the other side of the casting so I guess it is original. The driver side though has a bigger bleeder screw so I guess that one was replaced :(

No, the 1/4" bleeders are reproductions of the OE. The 3/8" are what is offered as a replacement. We're on the same page.

Yes we're on the same page. Today is one of those days where I feel like English is my 3rd language :P
NPD are repo and replacements would be 1/4 inch cylinders that were available back in the 60's 70's+

Sounds like my German anymore. I have had no one to converse with in German in over 10 years. Surprising how quickly it's lost when it's a second language.
