289 Date Codes
« on: April 06, 2016, 11:54:52 PM »
I wanted to run this by you all to make sure it will be correct.  My 66 GT has a K28 buck tag date. I have the following in place for my 289 "A" code engine:

Block - 5J25  cast date and 5J28 assembly stamp
Heads - 5H31 and 5J2
Distributor - 5JB
4V Intake - 5J25 cast date and a 5J tag (235-S)

Thanks for the help,

Allen

Allen,
Close, but reasonable.

+1  Don't know that there is any specific dates that are "correct"  but they appear IMHO in the neighborhood or range ;)

Autolite, I do not have a definitive answer but would offer that the engine ID tag is believed to be original to the intake and would note that the intake date is 5J25 and the tag is 5J.  Maybe someone with an original 289 has the date codes close to the end of the month and can shed some light.

On an engine assembled the last couple days of the month, does the engine ID tag generally fall on that same month or next?

Ones I have examples of - the engine tag date matches the assembly date stamped on the block.   Guess there might be a few out there were the engine was assembled then painted at the beginning of the next day but haven't seen this. Guess that could also apply to an engine built, stamped, then painted first thing on the first day of the next month but that should be an oddity rather than the norm just statistically
