Depending on plant and time period examples have been found like the example posted. Especially noticeable on cars with high contrasting colors such as exterior white.

On a restoration you should still be able to see that the outer edge is direct application and the majority of the inner area is a heavy misting. As mentioned the white really makes it stand out. In comparison a Poppy Red exterior over a red oxide floor makes the over spray (if applied this heavy) almost disappear

as i mentioned earlier - i had no red oxide originally visible underneath. i also, through sanding, have not seen any under the layers of history.

was your car having that much body overspray? it looks like it goes about everywhere

There was a lot! I think the old time guns really let the overspray fly.
