66 Dearborn 289 Convertible Front Spring Paint Markings
« on: February 07, 2016, 03:38:14 PM »
1. I used the search feature to find the Pete Bush application chart for front springs. The chart shows that for a 289 convertible without thermactor and built before 2/14/66 (with all transmissions, with or without power steering and/or a/c) the correct spring paint stripe should be gray. I was wondering if this is what you have found in your experiences with unrestored original cars.
2. Also, using the search feature I think I understand that these springs should have a second stripe.  Is that correct and if so, what determined that color?
3. I learned that the springs should be painted flat side down before installation so thanks for that tip.

An MPC chart dated Dec. 1966 agrees with that, with the exception of H/D suspension which is listed as brown.

.

Don't know if any of the other applications used that spring originally. Can report I do have documentation of a C code 66 Convertible, with automatic, no AC and no Thermactor as having a single gray stripe springs

No not sure what thread you picked that up from. From observation every 500 cars or so (might be more or less) a pair of springs were installed that didn't fit the min or max requirements (fell out side a little) and rather than scrap them they were marked as being different an supplied to the car plant. Workers would match up a pair of them for a single car and install. The owner never being the wiser or caring it appears.

Thanks for your help in substantiating the single gray stripe for my car.
