Topic: Looking for the proper carburetor

Hi everyone,

I have a 65 fastback, manual trans, a/c c-code GT clone that I just bought.  I want to put a proper auto lite 4v carburetor in her and was wondering what would be the right one, where can I find one and about what would I be looking at spending.  Any info would be helpful.

  Being that you are really not concourse, almost any 4100 Autolite carburetor with a 1.08 venturi is "proper". However, the part number for a correct one is C5ZF-9500-C or -E. It is identified by a shortened part number stamped into the metal of the left front mounting ear would be C5Z-C or -E. A core would be about $100, a total concourse rebuilt one about $400-500. Sources are here, or e-bay. Depending on where you are, there are Mustang shops or carburetor rebuild shop that might have one.

Are you faking a K code or A code car?

Original carb for the A code would be C5ZF-C or E K code would have been a C4OF-AL or C5OF-J  according the books I have handy.   

If you've done the chrome valve covers and such guess you get to by a $$$$$ (around $1500-up for a rebuildable core)  K code one

I had the opposite experience.  KP Carbs did a 4100 for my '66 fastback.  It was beautiful, but would hardly run.  I tried it on my fastback, and on several other 289 Mustangs, none of which it would run on, even after our mechanic at the shop attempted to tune it.  I took it to a local rebuilder, who basically said the best option was to salvage what we could from the KP "restored" carb.  I ended up cannibalizing the KP carb and using some of the pieces on another 4100 that I had.  End result, a carb that didn't look nearly as good as the KP one, but actually ran.
