68 hood black out
« on: January 09, 2016, 12:30:52 AM »
Was a hood blackout option available for a December built 68 mustang with a non turn signal hood ?

I never thought of that combination before, but I suspect that you would have had to purchase the exterior décor group to be able to get the two tone paint option. I have no documentation of that just my thoughts.

+1  but just a belief. Ford documents rarely if ever say when you can't get something only what you can get. Think that hood would look odd with the stripes IMHO plus never heard nor seen a single hood (even a repaint) with the stripes. One would have thought even someone modifying their car would have tried over all these years

Guess you could have Kevin Marti search the data base for you to see if there are any cars with the coding for no hood or decor option but with the two digit paint code

I did modify a 67 flat hood using a 69 scoop and mimicked the 69 blacked-out styling. Black-out was on the raised area of the hood with a 1/4" wide pinstripe, 1/4" off of the hood molding & blackout area, then went straight back to the windshield along the raised area of the flat hood. I guess that would be about 90% of the hood that was black.

Though this is not a great picture (taken with a 110 camera in '81) but I think it represents the description a little.
The whole car was anything EXCEPT concours! It was my 2nd car, built from parts & pieces extracted out of the Junk Yard this picture was taken in front of (Coachella Ca.) The car itself was found wrecked, and parted out about 50% at the time I rescued it.

There is a seafoam 68 GT fastback on ebay with this treatment and it looks nice but as everyone stated its never been seen. The listing states there is a marti report but no photo of it.

Are you talking about this Lime Gold GT? AFAIK that was not available in 1968 under any circumstances. The only two-tone hood paint I'm aware of was the dual stripe with the louvered hood, as shown in the attached Ford lit.

It's tastefully done, and has a factory-style look to it. Not concours, but when you consider all the crazy things people do to vintage cars, a little bit of creativity with a paint accent is pretty mild. The rest of the car looks very original, which helps "sell" the hood treatment. I don't care for the way they chromed the rectangular quarter reflectors, though.

Wasn't that a Shelby thing ? The chrome bezel.

Looks like it was! I still think the rectangular ones look better painted. The later style surface-mount ones look OK with the bright frames. Just my personal opinion, of course.

The rear quarter reflectors were first recessed and painted, and then later in the year the bezels were chrome and not recessed.  It was a changeover partway through the year.  Nothing to do with Shelby or non-Shelby.

The early, rectangular bezels were never chromed on non-Shelbies. ("Shelbys"? What's the correct plural?  :D )

The lime gold fastback on ebay is nice, but I don't like the state given ID plate?? Maybe a re-body or something?  And I cant stand the trunk weatherstripping glued on the quarters instead of the trunk lid,  :'( ugh....  Otherwise a very nice driver you can enjoy.
