Outer Moulding on '65 Pony Door Panels
« on: December 26, 2015, 08:03:54 AM »
I was just looking at mine and realized there is one screw in MY moulding in the center rear of it.

I was looking for new replacements and saw that they did not originally come with a screw hole in them.

I watched a video that CJPony has online on how to install these mouldings.......they seemed to have no problem getting them onto the panels.

I had originally thought that the mouldings sat on top of the panels like the inner ones do.

I found one account of a problem that FORD was aware of when the cars were new, and evedentally THEY drilled the hole and put the screw in.......

I'm not sure I like, or believe this....

Anyone else have experience with this?

The screw at the rear of the outer trim molding is a 66 requirement. It may have been a fix in 65 covered under a TSB or assembly line change. As the molding is identical for 65 and 66 except for the screw hole, it's a cost effective inventory technique for replacements, drill a hole if needed.

Don't recall a TSB article related to the screw and the door panel until 1967. Believe it mentions it as a fix to be done by the dealers

Will see if I can find the number, illustration and text

Had plenty of original door panels (65-66) over the years with trim with no screw holes but many with them

It's in the 66 Mustang Interior Manual (AM0012 pg 18), p/n 53060-S13, same screw used on 65-66 exterior mirrors.

Hmmm do you happen to have the date from the page - when the page was created?

Wonder if they did follow the detail on the line as shown shown, if they did follow it after that date (or another)  or something else took place

So many things come to mind considering other details shown that were not instituted at the plants - like the door tag being installed on the firewall in 66

Just leads one to question and wonder

Dated 9-28-65, superseding 7-22-65, effective with "CZU1-DR-502700 - Item 1, added (53060-S13) screw". The rest of the change related to the weathershield being moved to a different drawing. That's why I thought of a TSB for a retro-fit.

I'm guessing that the addition of the screw was to prevent the moulding from shifting off of the edge of the panel......

My car's scheduled build date was July 27th 1965-a couple of days before the first date that was mentioned, and way before the September date that was mentioned.

This all said I don't like the look of the screw as its not counter sunk, and LOOKS added.........

I think I'll seek out a replacement set of outer mouldings....
