How to tell an original gas tank?
« on: December 29, 2015, 03:49:44 PM »
I'm disassembling my '70 Dearborn built convertible. The gas tank looks old, but there's no drain plug. How do I tell if it's original?
Thanks,
Matt

I believe it was later 69 production that the drain plugs were eliminated from the assemblyline tanks.

MY late 69 SCJ had the original tank (look like this) !

I used OOOO steel wool and phosphate to clean

ALmost positive that there is a date stamp on the seam - I"ll bet Marcus will see this and WILL BE A TOPIC !! LOL
THere are not many that know the USS run numbers on there cars as the stamp MAY or MAY NOT be on 100%   Mine wasn't all there but nes 69 7236 was.

Mark
P.S.  Phosphate removes ink !

That's awesome, that's what mine looks like. My next question was going to be restoration. Where can I get the phosphate?
Thanks,
Matt

Yes, I second that question. What exactly do you mean by "phosphate"? Thanks.

I used Eastwood METAL BLACKENER SOLUTION .  It says it is Selenious Acid.  A little goes a long way as you just wet the pad a few times.

Eastwood is expensive and this is the probably not the BEST use of product  - but the result were great.  I also used this for the brake lines, gas lines and driveshaft all reused on my car.    (I know that most can't do to rust)

P.S.  Yeah I know -those that know me know "I'm mad at my money!" so when someone says " I used a Brillo pad" - DO THAT !

...so that would make it the down side of the mounting flange and unviewable when installed.  Brian

Yes from the ones I've seen - like some of the driver's side trunk floor stamping date locations
