Front Edge of Carpet--Where does it go?
« on: October 18, 2015, 04:50:36 PM »
Putting the carpet in and haven't found good pictures or reliable sources of where the front edge of the carpet should go.  Has to be one of the following:
1.  Lay over the top of the bottom edge of the firewall pad--if so how far--raw edge of carpet exposed.
2.  Terminate even with the bottom edge of the firewall pad--this could lead to gaping later.
3.  Tuck under the bottom of the firewall pad--could distort the pad a little.
Any advice?

Over the pad is where I had done it years ago without any guidance.  When I lined up the transmission opening and back edge where it should be, I had 3 to inches extra on the front edge and just didn't know how much to trim back.  I had to cut about three inches of carpet off under the heater cardboard vent just to get it far enough forward so the back and transmission opening would line up.  I believe if I leave about an inch overlap it should look right I hope.

Keep in mind that carpets and firewall pads fit a lot better back in the 60's. I don't know what Ford did exactly, but they did have control of their vendors, so "things" fit better.

Putting the carpet in and haven't found good pictures or reliable sources of where the front edge of the carpet should go. .........

Sorry didn't see the request

Here is one original example of the edge, placement and notches.

On a few examples I've found a larger notch for the gas pedal

Hope this helps

Jeff,
These pics are perfect.  Twenty and thirty years ago when I put in carpet, I know I didn't have to do this much trimming or else my memory is gone.  Thanks for the accuracy shown in these pictures.  I'll cut a nice even edge on the carpet and lay it in where it is shown.
