1966 Brake Pedal Assembly
« on: August 25, 2015, 05:48:18 PM »
For a 1966 289 Automatic, is there a difference in brake pedal assemblies between a drum power brake system and a drum manual brake system? I am asking the question because the brake performance is very  marginal on the car. Yet the master cylinder and booster have been rebuilt, the wheel cylinders are new, the lines are new, it has been bled several times. So I am wondering if somewhere in a prior ownership the brake pedal might have been changed or that this was a manual brake car that was converted to power.  The car stops in a straight line but the distance is excessive. It has long pedal travel and it is impossible to induce lock-up. Any thoughts on my next step? Thanks!

just worked on a similar problem last week. the shoes were not adjusted properly, not tight enough to drums. also someone had left out all the self adjusting mechanisms however the starwheel was there.

Unlike 67 and up Mustangs, the same pedals for power and manual brakes are used (AT and MT). Look at the power brake booster in the engine compartment at the firewall and check the lever action there. I'm not sure, but the rods may be different.

Thanks for those two replies. I did check those and they check out fine.  However what I did find was that the brake linings are glazed over.  The car has only about 100 or so miles on the new linings and they are glazed. We have only driven the car to road test it as it has been worked on.  So it is in and out of the garage and a few trips at 40 mph, etc to check things out.  Can these linings be saved or do I need new ones?

The finish is very good.  The drums were turned during the restoration so they are like new.
